Beginning
BEGINNING
Welcome to the world of hospitality, as it really is.
Hospitality began with something wonderfully simple: welcoming another person with goodwill.
At its heart, hospitality is about receiving people warmly, treating them with dignity and respect, creating a sense of belonging, and making them feel safe, valued and cared for, whether they are guests, customers, employees, partners or complete strangers.
But hospitality has evolved into much more than simply welcoming a guest.
Today, hospitality is a major component of the global service economy, encompassing hotels, restaurants, resorts, tourism, events, banqueting, conferencing, entertainment, cruises, leisure, travel and a growing range of experience-driven businesses.
Behind every successful hospitality business is an ecosystem of people and organisations working together, often behind the scenes, to make the experience possible.
There are the owners and investors.
There are the government and regulatory agencies.
There are the employees and leaders who deliver the service every day.
There are the guests and customers whose expectations continue to evolve.
There are the vendors, suppliers, consultants, technology providers, transporters and logistics partners.
And there are many others who may never receive applause, yet whose contribution can make or break the business.
Every part of the value chain matters.
And this is where things get interesting.
Across Africa, and particularly in Nigeria, we are only beginning to scratch the surface of what the hospitality and tourism sector can contribute to economic development, employment, investment, entrepreneurship and national growth.
The opportunities are enormous.
The industry is evolving.
Customer expectations are changing.
Technology is disrupting traditional business models.
And yet, one of our biggest challenges remains the same:
Do we have the mindset, talent, systems and leadership required to take advantage of the opportunities ahead?
There is still so much work to do.
There is a shortage of skilled and properly trained talent. There are gaps in service standards, leadership, employee engagement, customer experience, operational systems and business strategy. There are also many practices that have simply become “the way we do things”, whether or not they still make business sense.
And that is precisely why this blog exists.
THE STORIES BEHIND THE BUSINESS
Over more than two decades in hospitality, I have had the privilege of working across different roles, properties, teams and business environments.
I have seen the beautiful side of hospitality.
I have seen the challenging side.
I have seen moments that made me proud of this industry, and moments that made me stop and ask:
“Why are we doing it this way?”
I have witnessed exceptional service, difficult customers, remarkable employees, poor leadership, inspired leaders, workplace politics, operational failures, brilliant recoveries, unexpected lessons and those unforgettable situations that only someone who has actually worked inside hospitality can truly appreciate.
Some experiences teach you what to do.
Others teach you what never to do again.
And some leave you with a story that is simply too good not to tell!
This platform is therefore candid, practical, thought-provoking, educational and, every now and then, deliberately entertaining.
Here, we will look beyond the polished photographs, beautiful hotel lobbies and carefully scripted service promises.
We will talk about what really happens on the ground.
We will challenge assumptions.
We will question the status quo.
We will share lessons from real-life experiences.
We will examine the people, practices and decisions that shape hospitality businesses.
Most importantly, we will explore how each player within the hospitality ecosystem can do their part better.
WHOSE STORY WILL WE TELL?
Sometimes it will be the story of the Guest, expectations, complaints, loyalty, service recovery, memorable experiences and the moments that determine whether a customer comes back.
Sometimes it will be the story of the Employee, recruitment, training, leadership, motivation, workplace culture, performance, career growth and the realities of working in hospitality.
And sometimes it will be the story of the Owner or Investor, profitability, people, strategy, standards, operational efficiency, brand reputation and the difficult decisions required to build a sustainable hospitality business.
Because ultimately, hospitality is about people serving people.
And when we understand the experiences, pressures, expectations and responsibilities of each player, we can begin to build businesses that are not only commercially successful, but also better places to work, better places to do business and better places for people to experience.
So, pull up a chair.
Let’s have the conversations that are sometimes uncomfortable, often necessary and always worth having.
